National Merit Semifinalist
Bethany senior Tony Miller been selected by the National Merit Corporation as a scholarship semifinalist. He is one of four students from Elkhart County to receive this status for 2009-10. Bethany has had 14 semifinalists over the past ten years, which is five times the national average.
Tony is the son of Lyle and Bonnie Miller of Goshen. Tony, who has a career interest in sports journalism, has served on the school newspaper staff and has been highly involved in athletics as a scorekeeper, announcer, and statistician. He has helped create historical stats pages on the school’s website and authors a comprehensive sports blog: http://bleedingbruinblue.blogspot.com. He has also participated on the school’s Academic Superbowl social studies team.
In addition Corine Alvarez, daughter of Jim Alvarez and Diane Beam, was selected as a commended student. To earn this honor she is among the top five percent of the more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2010 National Merit Scholarship competition.
